Holiday Countdown: 40 Days! Boney M. - Petit Papa Noel & Expensive Elves

So I finally caved. I fought it long and hard. I bought a stupid Elf On The Shelf. I thought, "I am such a Christmas lover and I don't have an elf? Really, my problem is Pinterest. Even though I have entertained the thought of getting an elf I never had the urge. Then I started using my Pinterest account  (another thing I fought off even though I joined years ago). Yeah. The hook was random acts of kindness lists on top of the funny things you can do. I know we don't need a silly looking...wait...CREEPY looking doll...a doll that looks like a North pole version of Chucky....a doll that will kill you in your sleep. Yeah we don't need one of those. But I started thinking it would be cute. My 11 year old (who also thinks it looks creepy) of course knows about Santa but part of the unveiling of that mystery involved Santa always being alive in our home. We carry on as we always have. The cookies, the carrots, the letter ( if we get around to THAT), making sure the fire...

Holiday Countdown: 41 Days! Adam Sandler - The Chanukah Song Parts 3 & 4 and The Christmas Song

Continuing from yesterday. You know, I had no idea there was a part 3 and 4 until I put together the Parts 1 & 2 post. Too funny. I'm not up to date as you may have noticed. I'm also including Adam Sandler's The Christmas Song, which is not on my playlist. Part 3:  Part 4:  The Christmas Song:

Holiday Countdown: 42 Days! Adam Sandler - The Chanukuh Song Parts 1 & 2

I really dig Adam Sandler. This post is a double feature. I don't think I have to say too much about it. Right from the get go I liked hearing these two songs. I really get a kick out of what he does whether it's music or movies. Gnat's Christmas/Holiday Faves

Holiday Countdown: 43 Days! Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers - I'll Be Home With Bells On and Christmas With The Kranks

Seems to be a bit of a theme at this point of the playlist. Going home. I grew up listening to Kenny Rogers. Was a favourite tape we had. I had a Kenny Rogers Christmas album too. I decided not to include him on my playlist but at least I have him on here with Dolly. My father also had a tape that had Jolene and Coat of Many Colours on it. Ah first records then tapes haha...boy I'm dating myself. I still actually use tapes. I have 5 Christmas cassettes, one of which has Kenny's album. Now I'm remembering road trips with my parents when I was young. Was a fun time, brought me out of the dumps which was a naturally common place for me to be. Music...music of any kind, especially when paired with these memories saved me from losing my mind. And it's movie time again! We were planning on watching Christmas With The Kranks first. Another favourite. Tried to put it on the dvd player yesterday. But it wouldn't work. We couldn't figure out why the input fe...

Holiday Countdown: 44 Days! Irish Descendants - Heading Home For Christmas and Elf

I ordered the Irish Descendants Christmas album for 3 reasons: As you've probably guessed by this point, Christmas is up there for fave times of the year, so why not buy yet another Christmas album? I married an Irish man. It's kind of funny that he isn't keen on this album due to their style. I used to be in a Celtic band and was into this genre at that time. This song hits "home" with me as I don't get to visit my family very often and Christmas was always a family time for me. I think it took about 43 years for me to have my first Christmas without family whether it was immediate or my in-laws. So, I enjoy listening to this song as I wistfully think of home.  Tonight my daughter and I watched our very first Christmas movie of the season. Yes, this early. We have to or we won't get through them all. I aim for every weekend, but things happen, right? So we started on a Sunday this time. Elf is probably my daughter's favour...

Holiday Countdown: 45 Days! Diana Krall - Christmas Time Is Here

Back to my banking days. The Charlie Brown version played daily. I hated it. I cringed every time it came on. I couldn't stand this song. The kids voices? Maybe? I don't know. Just wasn't my thing. I actually don't mind it too much when I'm watching A Charlie Brown Christmas. Maybe the show itself puts me in a different state; one that allows me to appreciate it more. But when I really listen to it, the words are beautiful. And I love this version. Very mellow. Relaxing. Different. I'll take this version. :) Spotify: Gnat's Christmas/Holiday Faves

Holiday Countdown: 46 Days! Nat King Cole Trio - All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth)

I remember growing up listening to this song on a Christmas album that my mother eventually threw out. I was devastated when that record disappeared. The version I had was a kid singing it, but I like this version too. I sat there staring at the jacket, hours on end, much like our youth today stares at their phones. No worries, I'm not going to get into that, as I'm one of those people too. I was too young to understand that I too was going to lose my teeth. I was quite little. I just sat there, singing along even though I had no idea what I was singing about. Ah records. How things have changed! Spotify: Gnat's Christmas/Holiday Faves

Holiday Countdown: 47 Days! Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time

Ah, my days in banking. 9 straight hours of holiday music while I worked. Yeah, I focused on the music. Couldn't get enough of it. This was a song that I wasn't as fond of back then. It was something that grew on me. I'm not sure what it was. But somehow it made it to my list. Maybe it's memories of a job that I enjoyed, a song from my youth...whatever it was I have a fondness for it now.

Holiday Countdown: 48 days! Brenda Lee - Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree

An old classic...Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree...I can't listen to any other version without as much appreciation as this one. I remember teaching this to a piano student years ago. This was her favourite Christmas song. She learned and performed it at my recitals three years in a row if I remember correctly. Such a joy to listen to her perform it as she has a fantastic singing voice and used to sing it at the top of her lungs as she played. Not only is this a great song and a great classic, but it brings back a wonderful memory of a student I enjoyed teaching. And that is a reason all on its own to make my list. Another lovely memory for this song...it's not Brenda, but we have a fun version that always gets put on when the tree comes out and when we begin our Christmas morning presents. It's from a CD put out by .......wait for it.........K-Mart! Lolllll. It's awesome. While it's never as good as Brenda, it is actually quite funny with how it's a...

Holiday Countdown: 49 days! Idina Menzel & Michael Bublé - Baby, It's Cold Outside

This year, I was late in beginning my Christmas preparations. I do so much it takes me a few weeks to get everything done. With my busy schedule, I sometimes don't finish. This year I began on November 3rd. Yes this is considered late...for me. I was planning on being even later: I was supposed to wait until the 5th, as it's easier for me on the weekends. But the snow storm we had on November 2nd got me motivated (8 inches overnight). So yeah, baby, it really was cold outside!

Holiday Countdown - 50 days! Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town

So, what better upbeat song to start with than Santa Claus is Comin' To Town???? Anticipation, upbeat, a great version. Awesome!

Holiday Countdown: What the heck is this?

Just a blog counting down to the New Year. Why stop at Christmas, right? Mostly my fave songs will be posted here, but I will also include fave movies, décor, crafts and overall preparations. It'll just be what I feel like doing, so let's go with just whatever. :) With the song list, I have included classics as well as newer versions/non-traditional. I find that the classics alone would get a little stale, and only newer version would lack the foundations the classics set. Let the Christmas adventure begin!!
